Consultations
What To Expect
Whilst the majority of patients choose to consult in person, Zoom e-consults are available should that be preferable.
Upon arrival at 116 Harley Street, the receptionist will direct you to Mr Wareing’s clinic on the First Floor. Here, new patients will be asked to check/complete a registration form, and follow-up patients can take this opportunity to ensure that held information remains accurate.
Your initial appointment with Mr Wareing will last up to 30 minutes, during which he will take a full clinical history and examinations. Depending on the condition presented, certain specialised investigations may be required. These investigations can often be completed by Mr Wareing using the equipment available within the clinic, and may include:
Audiogram / tympanometry
Ear microscopy / suction
Rigid / flexible endoscopy
Videoendoscopy
Sometimes further tests are necessary, such as x-rays, blood tests, MRI, CT, or Ultrasound scans, or allergy testing. These can be organised by Mr Wareing’s secretary who will strive to obtain an appointment within the London Clinic or wider Harley Street community as soon as possible. For more information into these, please see Investigations.
For complex balance assessments or complex audiology tests, further arrangements will be made.
Results of most tests are available with 48 hours and a follow-up appointment will be arranged accordingly. Follow-up appointments are tailored to clinical need so may vary in length. These appointments can also be conducted remotely in certain cases. In the interest of the patient we aim to complete treatment as quickly as possible and in the fewest sessions possible.
Please note that The London Clinic is currently not taking on patients aged under-18.
Referral Letters
It is appreciated to have a referral letter from your GP, surgeon, or other physician prior to your appointment. This ensures the best quality of treatment and saves time on collecting your medical history. Please email this (and any other medical information relevant to your case) to sec@michaelwareing-ent.com prior to your appointment or present a physical copy to Mr Wareing’s secretary upon arrival.
If you have not been specifically referred to Mr Wareing it is helpful to facilitate communication between Mr Wareing and your GP, or other relevant health professionals, so he is made aware of medical details such as previous tests, reports, or investigations. This will help facilitate a smooth and swift appointment where appropriate tests can be performed.
Mr Wareing regularly sees patients visiting from overseas, often on Embassy recommendations. Please obtain a guarantee letter where necessary and let us know whether an interpreter is required – The London Clinic’s International Office will be able to assist you with this process, free of charge.
Outpatient Procedures
A number of tests are available within an appointment. These include:
Hearing Tests: Audiometry and Tympanometry
Pure Tone Audiometry is the standard assessment of hearing. This is performed in a sound proofed booth on calibrated instrumentation.
Tympanometry is a quick and painless investigation where the middle ear function is measured to aid diagnosis.
Microsuction and Aural Toilet
A microscope and small sucker are used to remove wax and debris from the ear, allowing a clearer view of the eardrum and effective diagnosis. Mr Wareing is greatly experienced in this procedure, having performed it successfully on thousands of occasions. It requires many of the skills of operative microsurgery of the ear and is best performed in expert hands.
Endoscopy
Mr Wareing’s practice is equipped with both rigid nasal endoscopes and flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy equipment for examination of the upper airways. For this procedure the airways may need to be prepared through use of decongestant spray and a local anaesthetic.
Rigid nasal endoscopy enables examination of the nasal cavity, back of the nose, and sinus openings, which in turn allows the diagnosis of sinusitis and similar sinus problems.
A flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy allows a view of the throat, voicebox (larynx), and nasal cavity.
Videolaryngoscopy
This specialised investigation allows an unprecedented view of the larynx and vocal cords and is particularly useful in the diagnosis of hoarseness and voice problems. The images collected are computerised, so can be kept as reference for further consultations.
This examination may require a throat spray of local anaesthetic, but not all patients find this necessary.
Investigations
Further tests may be necessary to best identify and treat the condition presented. These may include:
Blood Tests
Performed at The London Clinic Outpatient facility.
Microbiological Tests
Taken by Mr Wareing at your appointment and analysed at The London Clinic.
MRI, CT, or Ultrasound Scans
Performed at The London Clinic or at a trusted provider within the Harley Street community.
For those suffering with claustrophobia there are options of both the Open MRI Scanner or the Upright MRI Scanner.
Complex Audiology Investigations
These may take up to 3-hours to complete and are performed at Capital Audiology or Harley Street Hearing. Mr Wareing will provide them with detailed instructions for these tests and results will be discussed between Mr Wareing and the performing facility.
Mr Wareing has a close working relationship with all departments at The London Clinic and trusted external agencies. Results of investigations may be confidentially discussed between departments to provide the highest quality of treatment specifically tailored to each patient.
